Slovakia Might Lose the Tokaj Wine Brand Name

Slovakia might lose the right to use the wine brand “Tokaj”. The Republic of Hungary is suing the European Commission and demands that it cancels the registration of the protected geographical identification of “Tokaj Wine Region” allowed for Slovakia.

Slovakia does need an introduction. Where is it? It's really the start of Eastern Europe, being bordered by Austria to the West and the Czech Republic, then surrounded by Ukraine, Poland and Hungary. On January 1, 1993 its federation with the Czech Rebulic was finally officially dissolved and it became an independent sovereign state. Slovakia produces a truly great wine, although most wine drinkers would be familiar with it through its Hungarian expression: Tokay. The Tokajsky wine from Slovakia has its historical roots in the Tokaj wine region, a small part of which was originally within the Kingdom of Hungary.

Are Power Plants and Scheming Slovaks Really The Most Pressing Issues Facing Tokaj Winemakers?
It doesn't quite make the "three examples and it's a trend" rule, but over the last few days there have been two bits of public controversy surrounding the Tokaj wine region. First, on Monday came the news that Slovakia had sneakily arranged to have the small wine region that sits just over the border from Hungary's Tokaj entered into the EU's official registry as "Tokaj," despite what many here assumed was an earlier agreement that they would only tack similar-sounding adjectives ("Tokajsky" / "Tokajská" / "Tokajské") on to the name of the wines produced there.
