Zweigelt is a red wine grape variety developed in 1922, at the Federal Institute for Viticulture and Pomology at Klosterneuburg, Austria, by Fritz Zweigelt (who was later to become the director of this institute). It was a crossing of Blaufränkisch (Frankovka modrá) and St. Laurent (Svätovavrinecké) – two most grown red grape varieties in Slovakia. Plantings became widespread after the Second World War thanks to Dr. Lenz Moser. Zweigeltrebe has good resistance to frost and it is ripening early. 

Quality akostné odrodové víno is produced, as well as dry attribute wines – occasionally kabinetné (Kabinett), often as neskorý zber (late harvest) and Výber z hrozna (grapes selection) that might be developed in oak. Rarely Bobuľový výber (choice of berries) is produced. 

Zweigeltrebe is very popular for making fresh rosé. It varies from akostné odrodové víno to additional attributes, mostly suché (dry) kabinetné (Kabinett) or suché (dry) to polosuché (semi – dry) neskorý zber (late harvest).
