It is thought that Rulandské šedé is a mutant clone of the Pinot noir that occurred centuries ago. Grapes can have a brownish pink to black and even white colour appearance. Therefore the wines produced from this grape also vary in colour from a deep golden yellow to copper and even a light shade of pink. Variety can provide different characteristics depending on what type of soil is it grown, loamy soils can transmit high extract and the wine is often rich in sugar, Rulandské šedé as one of few white grape varieties can be also grown on gravelly and sandy soils providing complex and round wines. It is very crucial for the grapes of this variety to reach its full ripeness. Grapes must be processed quickly not to over-extract pinkish hue into wine.
Quality akostné odrodové víno is more occasionally produced, focus of the production is on wines with attributes, mainly as neskorý zber (late harvest) and výber z hrozna (grapes selection) which can vary from suché (dry) to polosuché (semi dry). One of the most famous značkové (brand) wine of Slovakia is produced from Rulandské šedé – Radošinský Klevner, which was one of the wines on offer at the wedding of the future Queen Elizabeth II in1947.
Special sweet attribute wines such as bobuľový výber (choice of berries), hrozienkový výber (selection of raisins) and slamové víno (straw wine) are made in optimal years.
Colour tones can vary, nose is dominated by ripen honey tones, taste is often powerful, rounded and supple, with noticeable level of alcohol and good supporting acidity at the long lasting finish.
