Slovak Tokajská wine-producing region to be renamed Tokaj

The Tokajská wine-producing region in eastern Slovakia is to be renamed Tokaj, according to an amendment to the Wine-producing and Viticulture Act that has been drawn up by the Agriculture Ministry and was approved by the government on Wednesday, March 31.

The proposal is intended to tackle semantic difficulties that have cropped up due to the current designation and relate to the peculiarities of the Slovak language and its origins. Use of the Slovak name is said to have put Slovak Tokaj producers at a disadvantage vis-à-vis their Hungarian counterparts.

"The legislative proposal introduces a change in the name of the Tokajská wine-growing region, bringing it into harmony with traditions, the ingrained method of labelling wine products in the region in question and previous legislation," the Agriculture Ministry stated, as quoted by the TASR newswire.
