Battle over Tokaj

Wine-makers from southeastern Slovakia are to be allowed to use the name "Tokaj" again, an issue that has long been subject to a dispute with the neighbouring country. On Tuesday, April 27, members of parliament supported the cabinet's draft amendment to the Act on Viniculture proposed by the Agriculture Ministry in a fast-tracked legislative procedure.

Are Power Plants and Scheming Slovaks Really The Most Pressing Issues Facing Tokaj Winemakers?
It doesn't quite make the "three examples and it's a trend" rule, but over the last few days there have been two bits of public controversy surrounding the Tokaj wine region. First, on Monday came the news that Slovakia had sneakily arranged to have the small wine region that sits just over the border from Hungary's Tokaj entered into the EU's official registry as "Tokaj," despite what many here assumed was an earlier agreement that they would only tack similar-sounding adjectives ("Tokajsky" / "Tokajská" / "Tokajské") on to the name of the wines produced there.

AT A world competition in Paris – Vinalies Internationales – Slovak wine producer Vladimír Mrva was awarded the title champion, Martin Pomfy won a gold medal and Chateau Topoľčianky garnered two silver medals.

Slovak Tokajská wine-producing region to be renamed Tokaj

 

The Tokajská wine-producing region in eastern Slovakia is to be renamed Tokaj, according to an amendment to the Wine-producing and Viticulture Act that has been drawn up by the Agriculture Ministry and was approved by the government on Wednesday, March 31.
